me too! i really don't know what's going on but these books are not booker prize worthy

the ones i've read are either aggressively average or just bad

message 6: by Adrian (new)

Adrian It was truly truly truly dreadful

Justina P 👏

message 8: by Sue (new)

Sue I'm feeling the same way about this year's longlist. The four I've read so far have been very underwhelming.

message 9: by Ninaminacat (new)

Ninaminacat My initial reaction was the same - but once I realised what the point of all those frustratingly meaningless conversations was (ie István‘s lack of emotional intelligence), I really enjoyed it. I don’t know whether listening to the audiobook, rather than reading the book, had any effect on my reaction,

This is the first of this year’s Booker list I have read so far, so can’t comment on the long list as a whole.

Diana that's modern literature for you. it was unreadable for me.

message 11: by Kate (new)

Kate “…felt like if you asked chatgpt to write a bad sally rooney spoof” never followed someone so fast

message 12: by Willoyd (new)

Willoyd I'm relieved someone else feels the same way about this year's list. 3 of the shortlist and 1 longlister read, and all, at best, disappointing. This was the worst - couldn't finish it.

i understand the point & what the book is trying to say, but if you're going to write a book about a passive character it still needs to be engaging

message 14: by Darina (new)

Darina mmmm, i get what you mean, it's funny but still a weird comparison, because chatgpt would never ever write it that simplistic, would rather use complicated phrases

message 15: by AJ (new)

AJ I read ‘Universality’ from the long-listed, and trust me, I reached the same conclusion x 🙌🏼

message 16: by Justyna (new)

Justyna Chat GPT would have done it much better

message 17: by Douglas (new)

Douglas Johnstone My feelings entirely. It has no relation with what most readers find enjoyable!

message 18: by Susan (new)

Susan Coleman I'm with you 100%. I can't remember the last enjoyable award winner or nominee I read--and that includes Pulitzers and Nobels. It's books like this that send me into reading slumps. I'm amazed this was published by a major house, let alone singled out for such a prestigious award.
