Book cover for Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell
With his long hair as ragged as rain and as black as thunder, he would have looked quite at home upon a windswept moor, or lurking in some pitch-black alleyway, or perhaps in a novel by Mrs Radcliffe.

I enjoyed the story but it was let down by the overwrought narration. Yes give the text some emphasis but we don't need to have it acted out. Spoiled the book for me.
Sue liked an answer about Ducks, Newburyport:
Ducks, Newburyport by Lucy Ellmann
There is plenty of punctuation, but the main narrative does not contain any full stops.

If Ellmann had been a man, would you have made a remark similar to ''miss little clever clogs''?
Sue and 1 other person liked Maureen Marsh's review of The Offing:
The Offing by Benjamin Myers
"I think this would be my favourite book I have read this year. A great coming of age story filled with nature's imagery. A book to taste, see and hear the wonder of nature. Will read it again and share it with friends and family.
"
Sue and 4 other people liked Nick's review of The Gallows Pole:
The Gallows Pole by Benjamin Myers
"A story about dedication to community, though dedication that is not entirely selfless. Also a story about the encroachment of the industrial age upon traditional ways of life. "

A wonderful little book, beautifully written. Full of kindness, gentleness, thoughtfulness and quiet. It's funny too, very charming. I loved it.
