Murray McEwan's latest novel, like some of his previous books, is as disturbing and depressing as anything else being written today. His story about life in 2130, with characters looking back at world occurrences over the last 115 years, is grim and sinister. The crime mentioned in the book jacket does not occur until the back of the book and it is as shocking and sad as one could anticipate. Admittedly, it did take me a while to get into the story but in the end I found "What We Can Know" to be a very satisfying read.
