Gary I grew up surrounded by wise guys who ran the numbers out of my father's candy store. They were fully formed human beings who talked family and sports like anyone else. However, what they did behind the scenes was kept from me. It's stories like this and Whitey Bulger books that help us understand some of their underground doings. I'm Sicilian, so I'm partial to the loyalty aspect of their character.

Deborah Sheldon Wise guys operating out of your father's candy store? That sounds pretty terrifying to me! I'm partial to Sicily too, mostly because of silly romantic reasons such as the The Godfather film. When I was young and a traveller, I made sure to go to Sicily, where I made a pilgrimage to Corleone. Palermo is a memorable place, and the Sicilian countryside is very beautiful.
