Thank you, my friend! Yeah... this guy doesn't know how to write a proper ending.. xD

Thomas Stacey Nice review. Since you liked this one I recommend Misery: another fairly short SK book with a great idea behind it. My first SK book and still one of my favourites.

Terry “To think something so dark and depressing could come out of a premise so simple.”
Well put! I thought the exact same thing.

Thanks, Thomas! I'll take a look at Misery, I never heard of this one.

Jody Fantastic review, Petrik! :-) I plan on reading some more of King's work this year. This sounds like a good candidate.

message 14: by Lucia (new)

Lucia Sounds like my kind of story ;) I am was surprised that ! never came across it since I love Stephen King, but it is probably because he wrote it under pseudonym... Great review!

message 15: by Orient (new)

Orient Great review, Petrik 😉 Wow, didn't know about this side of King!

message 16: by Daniel (new)

Daniel You should try the dark tower series. You can try the first 2 novels in less time than it takes to finish one of the light bringer novels so its not too much of an investment. There are a couple of things you should know though. The first book is basically a 200page collection of interconnected short stories and kinda read as such even though they have been revised to make them seem a little less so. It’s not as good as the second book but its so short that its easy to breeze through to the 2nd book which is fantastic. Secondly this series , while great , is also weird. Some people refer to it as fantasy but I don’t really know what it is... its such a mixed bag of genres. The other thing that is useful to know going into this series is that book 4 is basically a big flash back from when the main character Roland was younger. If you know that going in the story in that book is really good. But if you go in expecting it to further the plot of the series it tends to disappoint some people including me when I first read it.

Anyway you should check it out.

Mary ~Ravager of Tomes~ Woo! Great review Petrik!! I seriously need to read this one if for no other reason than to get the bad vibes of Mr. Mercedes out of my brain! 😂

Dark Tower series is one I'm looking forward to try, not anytime soon though. Most likely next year. Thank you so much for the insightful information, I'll keep it in mind!! :)

Thank you, Mary! You should give this a try. It's really short and great for a palate cleanser imo! :D I will make sure not to read Mr Mercedes.... xD

Amy Norris Great review, I agree with everything. I felt exhausted reading this, feeling the pain of the characters. I loved it. I read somewhere that the setting is America if Germany won WW2 which makes sense.

message 24: by Justine (new)

Justine I read this book a long time ago (which is why only a rating and no review), but I still think about it. It is one of my favourite works by King actually.

Thank you, Amy! Ohhh that's an interesting theory! I love how this short book could spawned so many theory! :D

It's really good, Justine. I even think this short book is better than The Stand xD

Ha! You think? :D I also really liked Stand By Me, another novella length piece written back around the same era. It's really a contemporary fiction piece as it has no speculative elements at all. The movie they made from it is also very good.

I only recently (in the past year) started reading Joe Hill, and it is also very good. He definitely has his father's gift for readable storytelling.

Hahaha just my opinion of course!! I'm not too keen on contemporary fiction but I'll keep this in mind when I'm in the mood for trying something new!

As for Joe Hill, he's another author that I think eventually I'll read too! :)

message 30: by Puck (new)

Puck Great review Petrik! I read this book last year and it 'exhausted' me too; you could really feel the fatigue seep into your own bones. Have you read more by 'Bachman' or King?

I'm still new to his works, I will give more of them a try in the future! Thank you, man! I'll try to look up Rage too.

Thank you, Puck! I've only read The Stand and The Mist from King. Including this one, only three so far. I have my eyes on 11/22/63 too though and will give it a go in the future! :)

I struggled with 11/22/63 however The Green Mile and his collection of short stories - Different Seasons - are well worth a read. You get Shawshank Redemption and Apt Pupil in there which are two of my all time favourite short stories. King is one of those authors who makes up a scary amount of my to-read column though and I doubt I'll ever get to them!

I think the complicated things with me and King is that I've watched a lot of his movies already, I tend to had severe problems reading something that I've watched. But yeah, this guy produced so many damn books and almost all of them were adapted into a movies or tv series, I dunno if I'll ever catch up to reading all his books xD

I was disappointed with how The Shining ended. Hmmm! This seems to be a reoccurring theme with King books.

Yeah... such a shame really. I heard from everyone to not expect any proper conclusion reading all his books.. xD

message 38: by Harmien (new)

Harmien At first it confused the heck out of me. Is this current? Is it sci-fi? It is a lot of different things. Much like '1984' but set in the 1950s. he boys seem a bit too educated for 16 year-olds, well versed in Shakespeare and Monte Christo and psycho analysing each other at every turn. But noce you get past that you accept it, like they do. Still a few question marks like 'what is the deal with April 31st? Not once but twice. page 204 and 206.... It was a one-day page turner, horrific and sad and hopeful with even a black entity at the end, a la Stephen King . I loved it in all it gruesomeness.

message 39: by Marta (new)

Marta I agree about the ending. What exactly did Garrity see at the end that motivated him to run?

My theory was that the walk was Garrity's way of running from his life thinking he was going to die in the end...yet he didn't. Was he continuing the walk (now run) in the ultimate hope to finally die?

message 40: by Pete (new)

Pete Peterson This is a good review of the book. It's definitely worth reading, but the ending feels like it needs more. It'll be interesting where the movie goes with it.
