What a beautiful review, Candi.
Wow! Awesome review, Candi. I wasn’t sure I would be drawn to this but given your review, I think I need to give this author a go :)
I had not been considering this one, but your beautiful review is hard to ignore, Candi. See me waffling? ;-)
I agree with the others, Candi. This is one of the most beautiful reviews I've ever read. Not only beautiful, but as usual, you open up your heart and mind and share your experience. I wasn't planning to read this one but after reading your review I feel that I must.
Tremendous review, Candi. You always bring such a personal flavor to your writing that makes me feel how attached you were to the book while reading.
You may have convinced me. As I said on Pedro's review, I have been avoiding Rooney because of the hype. Maybe I should reconsider.
Candi, this was an astounding review. I confess I was really looking forward to finding out your thoughts on it. Now read Normal People and after watch the TV series - the best TV series ever - in my view anyway.
Your review is beautiful and powerful, Candi. I read one of Rooney's earlier books and appreciated her fine writing, but I never connected with the story nor the characters. This title interests me, as it did you. Your fine review convinces me to try Rooney again.
I shall put this on my TBR list. I gave Normal People an A+ (that is how I used to rate books before I joined GRs!)...
That’s a beautiful first quote. Even if that’s not the only meaning of life, it’s an honorable goal.

Thanks very much, Lorna! I was swept off my feet by this novel :)
Jen wrote: "Wow! Awesome review, Candi. I wasn’t sure I would be drawn to this but given your review, I think I need to give this author a go :)"
Thanks a bunch, Jen! I have to say, it's definitely something you should form an opinion on yourself, if you are at all interested!
Bionic Jean wrote: "A simply lovely review. Thanks Candi :)"
Thank you so much, Jean. This novel really resonated with me :)
Jenna wrote: "This is one of the most beautiful and poignant reviews I've ever read. Well done, Candi!"
Jenna, it's so sweet of you to say so! I really think it's Rooney's prose that I've shared that helped me along with the review :) She's the one with the magical pen!
Zoeytron wrote: "I had not been considering this one, but your beautiful review is hard to ignore, Candi. See me waffling? ;-)"
Haha, ZT! Would you care for some maple syrup with those waffles? ;D :D Thanks for your kind comment, as always. I was so pleasantly surprised by my reaction to this one :)
"We want to be seen and heard on some personal level by another human being."
That is true, Candi. This novel seems to illustrate this universal quest clearly. Thank you for a superb review.
Loved reading your thoughts on this one! I wish I'd savored it a bit more but there's something so compulsively readable about Rooney's writing and I read it in one day. I'll have to re-read some day.
Loved your review and loved that you loved the e mail correspondence. I heard an interview with her and apparently, many people criticized the emails saying millennials did not send e mails. Well, she said she did , so ignored these comments. I loved Normal People, and am looking forward to reading this one.
Lovely review, Candi. Normal People didn't resonate with me, so I discounted this one. You and my GR friend Bonnie G both have me reconsidering that decision.
Anne (On semi-hiatus) wrote: "I agree with the others, Candi. This is one of the most beautiful reviews I've ever read. Not only beautiful, but as usual, you open up your heart and mind and share your experience. I wasn't plann..."
Thank you for such a generous comment, Anne. It's really due to the novel's heart that I felt moved to put some of what I felt into words. It's difficult for me to predict who would feel similarly -mainly because I was baffled by some of the lukewarm reviews of this one. I hope if you decide to read it that you will have a moving experience as well :)
Sara wrote: "Tremendous review, Candi. You always bring such a personal flavor to your writing that makes me feel how attached you were to the book while reading."
Thanks a bunch, Sara! You know I can get very attached to my books, and this one is definitely very special to me. I bought it for kindle but I need to have the hardcover to look at on my favorites shelf :)
So glad this novel resonated so well with you. A gem is a gem and it looks like you just stumbled upon one; I love how your entire review becomes a celebration of it. As you’re drawing my attention to this particular title, I’m also noticing how many other GR friends have also read it – and enjoyed it – or intend to give it a try. Wow.
Diane wrote: "You may have convinced me. As I said on Pedro's review, I have been avoiding Rooney because of the hype. Maybe I should reconsider."
Diane, Pedro is very rarely wrong (don't tell him I said rarely ;D ) The good thing is that this one is such a quick read - the pages flew by for me. You won't have to invest too much time to see which side of the fence you land :) I'd love to know!
Bianca wrote: "Candi, this was an astounding review. I confess I was really looking forward to finding out your thoughts on it. Now read Normal People and after watch the TV series - the best TV series ever - in ..."
Thanks so much, Bianca! I was super interested in this because of that whole email business, but it was really your review that made me want to get to it sooner rather than later. I'm so glad that I did so. It came at just the right time for me. You now, I just bought Conversations with Friends the other day, so now I'm not sure what to do about reading that or Normal People next! I'll definitely be reading both, and am quite keen to watch the series now :)
Candi,
This review of yours reminds me that it's far more important to learn why a friend has enjoyed a read rather than spend my time trying to figure out if I'm going to feel the same way about it. This is why we read, isn't it? This is why annoying people like me poke my head over the tops of books to ask strangers, "Whatcha reading? Are you loving it?"
Wow. Your review made me want to read a novel I've had little interest in since I read the author's first two books and mentally decided her writing was not for me (too young for the too old--lost points of reference) but maybe there still is something there, there. Thanks for your thoughts even if I still choose not to get to it.
Amazing ! I probably would have skipped the sex part of the novel but the rest of it seemed so thoughtful. Your review is absolutely profound. I’d almost say that is a great anthem to live by. It’s almost mystical. I love it.
Candi, your amazing review might just make me change my mind about Rooney. I haven’t read anything of hers yet but I instinctively stay away from fashionable authors.
Candi, my friend, this is a completely outstanding review of an excellent novel by a fresh new voice in the literary landscape.
Really glad you loved it as well, and even more glad about the fact that an excellent reviewer like you has the power to change a lot of reader's minds about Rooney. Because no, I don't think she is just another highly hyped novelist with nothing new to offer. This is what Goodreads should be all about.
And yes, I believe Rooney is here to stay!!
Antoinette wrote: "Loved your review and loved that you loved the e mail correspondence. I heard an interview with her and apparently, many people criticized the emails saying millennials did not send e mails. Well, ..."
Antoinette, I've watched an interview with Rooney last night on YouTube where she says that she only writes about stuff she went through and believe she knows about. So yeah, there's that as well. ;)
Rita wrote: "Your reviews are so compelling. I feel happy just reading your reviews."
Aww, thank you, Rita. It's my pleasure then :) :)
Barbara wrote: "Your review is beautiful and powerful, Candi. I read one of Rooney's earlier books and appreciated her fine writing, but I never connected with the story nor the characters. This title interests me..."
Thanks so much, Barbara! Well, maybe this one, with its slightly more mature characters, will appeal to you more? Perhaps it's worth a try if you liked her writing previously. I hope you decide to give it a try :)
JimZ wrote: "I shall put this on my TBR list. I gave Normal People an A+ (that is how I used to rate books before I joined GRs!)..."
That's good news, Jim! I'm really looking forward to reading the Rooney books I've missed out on so far :)
Judith wrote: "That’s a beautiful first quote. Even if that’s not the only meaning of life, it’s an honorable goal."
Isn't it just lovely, Judith? It seems to come to just a basic need in life. Something so simple yet gratifying :)
Laysee wrote: ""We want to be seen and heard on some personal level by another human being."

Laysee, this book is a treasure. I'm so glad I picked it up exactly when I did. I needed to hear some of the messages contained within :) Thank you so much for your kind comment!
Suzanne wrote: "Loved reading your thoughts on this one! I wish I'd savored it a bit more but there's something so compulsively readable about Rooney's writing and I read it in one day. I'll have to re-read some day."
Many thanks, Suzanne! Oh yes, this was compulsively readable. I would have gobbled it down more quickly too, if I hadn't brought it along on a little trip. But I'm glad I read it more slowly, because I was a bit bereft when it ended!
Antoinette wrote: "Loved your review and loved that you loved the e mail correspondence. I heard an interview with her and apparently, many people criticized the emails saying millennials did not send e mails. Well, ..."
Thanks a bunch, Antoinette! I don't know how critics and/or readers could just rule out an entire generation and say no one does such things! Of course, there are various types of people in every single generation! And if one is a writer, then I especially can see the draw with email correspondence :) I'm really happy you loved Normal People, and I hope you fall for this one too!
Lisa wrote: "Lovely review, Candi. Normal People didn't resonate with me, so I discounted this one. You and my GR friend Bonnie G both have me reconsidering that decision."
Thank you, Lisa! Well, I'm starting to find that there are a lot of friends that liked one of her novels and not the other. And it really seems to vary as far as which one pleased and which one didn't! It makes me even more anxious to carry on with Rooney's work :)
Charles wrote: "So glad this novel resonated so well with you. A gem is a gem and it looks like you just stumbled upon one; I love how your entire review becomes a celebration of it. As you’re drawing my attention..."
Charles, this gem shined even brighter than I imagined it would! You mentioning this review as a celebration made me smile - yes, it felt like that to me! If I could ever so gently persuade you to read this some day (wink, wink), I would be so damn interested in hearing your thoughts on it :) :)
