Antoinette Lovely review, Cheri!

message 3: by Mark (new)

Mark Porton Terrific review Cheri, I love the dog angle 🐶

message 4: by Bianca (new)

Bianca Superb review, Cheri. I haven't come across this author. This novels size is daunting, I won't add it to my TBR.

message 5: by Gaurav (new)

Gaurav Sagar Great review, Cheri. The bok looks promising but the sheer number of pages seems daunting to me :)

message 6: by Canadian Jen (new)

Canadian Jen Nice review, Cheri! I still have yet to read Edgar Sawtelle but it is on my list :)

message 7: by Cheri (new)

Cheri Karen, thank you! I really enjoyed this - it covers a lot of 'territory' of the beginnings how Edgar Sawtelle came to be, but this covers the time before Edgar Sawtelle.

message 8: by Cheri (new)

Cheri Antoinette, thank you so much!

message 9: by Julie (new)

Julie G Elbow!!

Cheri Mark, if you haven't read 'The Story of Edgar Sawtelle', this story shares the years that lead up to Edgar Sawtelle, which I think you would enjoy, as well. 'Familiaris' is set in the time before Edgar Sawtelle and is about both how their passion for dogs began, as well as many other themes, families, etc. If you haven't read Edgar Sawtelle, then you might want to read that one first - especially if you prefer less pages. Both books are worth reading, in their own way.

message 11: by Cheri (new)

Cheri Bianca, I completely understand! I hope you're loving whatever you're reading these days!

message 12: by Cheri (new)

Cheri Gaurav, I won't twist your arm! I am not a big fan of books that are this long, but his 'The Story of Edgar Sawtelle' is one of those books that I loved (but it was also less pages than this one). Once I started reading this one, though, I was hooked. Having said that, overall I loved 'The Story of Edgar Sawtelle' more.

message 13: by Cheri (new)

Cheri Jen! I think you would love Edgar Sawtelle! We all have books we want to read, but haven't found the time, or perhaps the *right* time to read them. but I hope you can squeeze that one in sometime this year!

message 14: by Cheri (new)

Cheri Julie, I wish I remembered why they called him Elbow... I can't imagine parents actually naming him that. I think it was a nickname given to him during the war... as this story begins not all that long after the war (WW1, I think), and there are a few characters (including Elbow) who were impacted by the war.

message 15: by Kimber (new)

Kimber Silver What a gorgeous review, Cheri! I'm glad you enjoyed this prequel to one of your favorite books. : )

message 16: by Laysee (new)

Laysee Cheri, this must be an enthralling read for you to journey over a thousand pages with a character from a previous book. Lovely review.

message 17: by Cheri (new)

Cheri Kimber, thank you! It was different, in some ways, from 'The Story of Edgar Sawtelle', but I loved that it shares the story of how Edgar Sawtelle came to be.

message 18: by Cheri (new)

Cheri Laysee, thank you! The length felt daunting as I began reading, but it wasn't all that long before I felt like this was worth my time to read this story from beginning to end (even if the 1st book in the series is more recent time-wise in storyland)

message 19: by Ron (new)

Ron You made me add another one, Cheri! Glad you did because I had no idea it was coming - loved his other book "Edgar Sawtelle", and it's been quite a few years. Terrific review you wrote!

message 20: by Cheri (new)

Cheri Ron, thank you, and I hope you will be happy that you added it. Like you, his Edgar Sawtelle remains among my favourite books, and while this shares the generation before the time of Edgar Sawtelle, I'm so glad that I read it. I hope you love it, too!

message 21: by Karen (new)

Karen I come to check on what you have read and keep adding to my tbr 😁🤦‍♀️

message 22: by Cheri (new)

Cheri Karen, I am slowly making my way through my 'list' and I keep thinking about this book! I'm so glad to see you've added this one!

message 23: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Crytzer Fry WOO HOO for five stars. Getting my copy next week and will dig in after another I just started. I'll come back to fully read your review when I'm done. So happy to see your love for this; I SO loved Edgar Sawtelle.

message 24: by Cheri (new)

Cheri Melissa, this was very different, in some ways, as it is set in the years prior to Edgar Sawtelle, the beginnings of how Edgar Sawtelle's story came to be. Edgar Sawtelle is one of the few books I've re-read, so I was thrilled when I saw he had a new book coming. I hope you love this one, too!

It's been so long, I might need to do a re-read, too. Yes -- I was aware it was a prequel, which makes it even more exciting to me!!!

message 26: by Cheri (new)

Cheri Melissa, I'm so glad that you want to read this, but not all that surprised! His Edgar Sawtelle was one of those books that I doubt I could ever forget!

message 27: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Do we need to read Edgar Sawtelle prior?

message 28: by Cheri (last edited Jun 11, 2024 05:30PM) (new)

Cheri Stephanie, this is actually the story of the family before Edgar Sawtelle, so you don't need to worry about that. Having said that, I hope you do find the time to read Edgar Sawtelle after you read this!

message 29: by Candi (new)

Candi I remember really enjoying Edgar Sawtelle, but have hazy memories of the details of that one. Sounds like I can get away with just diving into this one though. And I might just do that when I can carve out a decent chunk of time to do so. Marvelous review, Cheri!

message 30: by Cheri (new)

Cheri Candi, my memories of reading Edgar Sawtelle are somewhat hazy, as well, I mostly remember how much I loved it. This takes place before, sharing how it began. It is definitely not a quick read, but it is worth it!

message 31: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly Fascinating review. Sounds wonderful.

message 32: by Cheri (new)

Cheri Kimberly, thank you! I am glad to see that you've added it, and I hope you love it, too!

message 33: by Rob S (new)

Rob S Great review, I was on the fence and you tipped me 😄

message 34: by Cheri (new)

Cheri Rob, I hope you enjoy this one as much as I did. It shares the years before Edgar Sawtelle, not sure if you've read that or not, but I hope you enjoy reading this one!

message 35: by Jan (new)

Jan Rice I loved reading The Story of Edgar Sawtelle but I abhorred how it ended.

message 36: by R L HERSKOWITZ (new)

R L HERSKOWITZ Cheri, incredible review! Thank you.

message 37: by Cheri (new)

Cheri Jan, I loved Edgar Sawtelle, as well, but this one was different since it tells the story leading up to Edgar Sawtelle, it that helps!

message 38: by Jan (new)

Jan Rice Thank you, Cheri.

message 39: by Cheri (new)

Cheri R L HERSKOWITZ, I’m so sorry, I missed seeing your comment! This was an incredible story!

message 40: by Cheri (new)

Cheri Jan, you are welcome!

message 41: by Diane (new)

Diane Barnes I never read Edgar Sawtelle, but this sounds good enough to tackle. Great review.

message 42: by Cheri (new)

Cheri Diane, I loved Edgar Sawtelle, but since this one shares the “before” story of the family, etc., you might end up preferring reading this one first, and then hopefully reading Edgar Sawtelle.

message 43: by Nancy (new)

Nancy Did you notice all of the strange typos where the word opposite appears within other words? It is very offputting.

message 44: by Cheri (new)

Cheri Nancy, I don't recall having any strange typos where the word opposite appears within other words... I can imagine it would be very offputting!

message 45: by Ron (new)

Ron Cheri, my library came through for me. I've read the book now and it was simply great, just as you had said. Your review put it on my list and I'm very happy about that. :)

message 46: by Cheri (new)

Cheri Ron, I'm so glad to see those five stars! I was lucky to get an ARC, but I also bought a hardcover copy of this one from the publisher. I was so excited to see this one, as Edgar Sawtelle was one of my favourite books (and still is)

message 47: by Marsha (new)

Marsha Si happy to see your 5 star review! I read and loved It Edgar Sawtelle last month. While disappointed in the ending, it was a wonderful read, so I downloaded Familiaris on my Kindle and I’m enjoying it SO much!

message 48: by Cheri (new)

Cheri Marsha, this story steps back in time for the backstory of Edgar Sawtelle. I will have to hunt down your review for Familiaris!

message 49: by Karon (new)

Karon Buxton Hi Cheri do you need to read the story of Edgar sawtelle first ?

message 50: by Susan (new)
