Excellent review and thank you for hiding a spoiler! Too many folks don't hide them these days.
In the defense of most people, the spoiler tags are hidden in the formating tips section so it isn't very user-friendly to use!
I read this book, too, and had as many questions as you. And what about the "affair" between her friend and the driver ed teacher? I could see no point in that. Too many loose strings. Needed an editor. But I read it because I said I would. There were several stories here - I did not see the point and what did happen to the "loving" daddy? peace, janz
This sounds like a very trying book, but good for you, Lisa, for finishing it. I would have dnf'd this in a heartbeat!
I didn't love it either, but don't share your issues. My comments follow (SPOILER ALERT):
Her father left (& killed himself in the river) because of the terrible time they had on their trip to the south and she said she wanted to leave him.
I thought the ending was good. One of the main themes of the book was the simmering conflict (secrets) between mother and daughter, things were ok for now with a brief glimpse into their futures.
Why did the mother stay in Swift River? No money, misguided hope that the father might come back, no family, few options.
In response to the bike accident and Rick, not major plot points.
The letters are separate from the "mystery" of what happened to the father, other than an explanation of why Lena, her father's closest emotional relative, wasn't there for him. IMHO, the letters' purpose is to provide back story to the husband and the town. And, also IMHO, to break up the teenager's story.
Thanks for helping me think about the book a bit more before writing a review!
Completely agree with review! Forced myself to finish, because I had already invested too much time into it.
These were exactly my thoughts and issues! I felt like this was clearly a first effort and it shows promise, but the lack of resolution to major plot points makes the book fall flat for me.
I have to say - I think you missed the whole point of the book. There are people who "should" do things but don't because that is who they are. I know plenty of people like that and sometimes I'm even one of them. Your question about Pop leaving is really disturbing. Didn't you get what was happening to him and around him? He just couldn't handle it anymore.
