message 1: by Ron (new)

Ron If the kid's from your gene pool, just give them a crayon and some paper. They'll probably come up with a Caldecott winner on their own.

message 2: by Diane (new)

Diane Johnson I really thought Knight Owl by Christopher Denise was cute. Got it for my neighbor's kids.Knight Owl (Caldecott Honor Book)

message 3: by Mary (new)

Mary I have to admit to reading Dr. Seuss to my daughter. As she got older I read her C.S. Lewis books and even took her to see the local plays.

message 4: by Kathy (new)

Kathy My kids were big fans of If You Give a Mouse a Muffin.

Yes! This one is brilliant!
Herve Tullet also has some fun, interactive books for little ones.

message 7: by Pat (new)

Pat I do not know at what age '10 Minutes till Bedtime becomes ideal reading but it is charming beyond words. And for a nearly wordless picture book that is saying something. Also Sandra Boynton's board books are wonderful, active and lyrical with joyous animals doing common things

message 8: by David (new)

David Sometimes I Like to Curl Up in a Ball by Vicki Churchill is about perfect. Also: how often do you find a book where the primary character is a wombat?

message 9: by Lize (new)

Lize When I was little, I loved the following books: Ferdinand, Horton Hears a Who!, No Roses for Harry, and Where The Wild Things Are. One of my favorite stories, The Point, was from an album by Harry Nilsson.

message 10: by Louise (new)

Louise Go for any Sandra Boynton book! They are funny and great fun to read. She also has some CDs with great songs that relate to her books. My favorite is "But Not the Hippopotamus". Of course, I am a true fan of the hippo in kids' books.

message 11: by Gail (new)

Gail When we were young I remembered my older sister reading us the Frances books, by Russel and Lillian Hoban. There’s are lots of them but my favorite was A Bargain for Frances, and a Birthday for Frances. When my daughter was little 2-3, she loved them because Frances didn’t always do what she should, and lessons were learned. And she was an early reader, so she took the books to preschool and would read them to the younger kids. Another great book for slightly older kids is Hurty Feelings. Here’s some more.
Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel, Strega Nona, George and Martha books, and The Stupids series, by James Marshall. So many others. Good luck.

message 12: by Joshua (new)

Joshua It's hard not to love Roald Dahl, which is enjoying a resurgence of late, but perhaps too advanced for 2 year olds?

message 13: by Jerry (new)

Jerry I read the early readers to both of my girls over 22 years ago. One of my favorite authors is James Herriot and if/when I have a grandchild, I will read them his stories.

message 14: by Sally (new)

Sally We Don't Eat Our Classmates by Ryan T. Higgins. I Want My Hat Back by John Klassen. Funny Lunch and Fun In The Sun by David Catrow.

message 15: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly Orr Robert Munsch and Berenstain Bears were classics in our family!

message 16: by Beth (new)

Beth Would agree with Boynton books, above. They’re perfect and lots of fun!

message 17: by Charles (new)

Charles Some books my kids liked that were a lot of fun for me to read as well:

The last one was great after they memorized Goodnight Moon and Halloween came around.

message 18: by Natalie (new)

Natalie Pietro When I was a little girl, I feel in love with Maurice Sendak's Chicken Soup with Rice. I read it so much my paperback fell apart. I loved the rhythm of this book and the artwork.
My sons have been very fond of B.J. Novak's Book with No Pictures. They find it incredibly funny and ask for me to read it every time it's my turn to be the classroom reader.

message 19: by Rusty (new)

Rusty Ian Falconer's OLIVIA books are the best! I sent them all to my sister's kids...and I own the entire set...and I have no children. That says it all.

message 20: by Roffino (new)

Roffino My two year old nephew loved 2 recently:
1) Christopher Pumpkin Christopher Pumpkin
2) All of the Little Blue Truck books Little Blue Truck
3) (All Sandra Boynton books) Sandra Boynton

Thanks for the Fireman!

message 21: by Katie (new)

Katie My nephews used to really enjoy Room On The Broom by Juila Donaldson. Ive read that so many times over the years that i probably know it off by heart now.
One from my childhood that i always enjoyed was We're Going On A Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen.

message 22: by Bronwyn (new)

Bronwyn Knox How about Arnold Lobel? My daughter liked those and I think my brother and I did too when we were little. Mouse Soup, Frog and Toad, and Mouse Tales.

Do check out Room on the Broom movie. It was streaming for a while, but I don't think anymore. Do check out your local library. My son loves that movie. And Stickman if your nephew has not seen him. Streaming on Amazon Prime. Another great children's book turned to movie.

Leigh Taylor Beautiful Oops! by Barney Saltzberg

message 26: by Patti (new)

Patti Goodnight Moon is great for bedtime.

message 27: by Courtney (new)

Courtney John Klassen's books are great, and can be a bit dark. Julia Donaldson (The Gruffalo, Room on the Broom). My kiddo is also a big fan of Mo Willems, Elephant and Piggie/Pigeon series.

message 28: by Brent (new)

Brent I would second any book by Robert Munsch. My son loves his books. There a regular go to for bedtime stories. Might be a little too much for 2 year olds, but The Book With No Pictures by B. J. Novak is also a hit with my son.

message 29: by Kelly (new)

Kelly My sons are a “little older” than yours (30 and soon to be 23), and they both loved the Richard Scarry books and wel as the Little Critter books. My youngest was into Thomas the Train. I don’t know what your kids would be interested in these books, but when my oldest was younger, he loved finding GoldBug in the RScarry books. 😊

message 30: by A.C (new)

A.C Wright We're Going on a Bear Hunt Micheal Rosen and Helen Oxenbury

After 10 years of reading this as a school teacher I finally got the chance to read it to my own child and even though it was already a good book for the 4+ crowd, reading it to 3 and under really transformed my appreciation of the book. What an adventure, what great emotive language and feeling, take them to the park afterwards and you'll soon be going on your own bear hunts over and under and through the landscape.

And I have to agree that the best picture books and genuine and really touch on the wonder of the world seen through children's eyes.

A few favourite picture book authors; Micheal Rosen, Judith and Allen Ahlberg, Mem Fox, Judith Kerr, Jackie French, Libby Gleeson, Pamela Allen, Bob Graham, John Birmingham

This list has a bit of an AUS/UK slant to it

Oh an be prepared when you read the last Mog book... I cried so much!

message 32: by Bryce (new)

Bryce Wilson Everything by Julia Donaldson is a delight. They're basically primers to teach kid to love rhythm and rhyme in language.

message 33: by ~☆~Autumn (new)

~☆~Autumn I admit to wickedly and foolishly reading The Cask of Amontillado to my 6 year old son and so he tried to wall in his Dad's law partner. What was I thinking?

message 34: by Molly (new)

Molly Weeks Shoemaker I know this is over a year old, but I feel like now is the time for No, David by David Shannon. It's just picturres and you make up the story as you go (well at least I did with mine).
