Paul Great review! I basically felt the same about all the stories as you did. Demons of Arae does end up the most important. It’ll definitely be important for the rest of the series. You are right about that.

Thank you, Paul! Yeah, I have a feeling that's the short story that matters. The first two short story, and the last one, were the good ones. The rest felt like fillers. I just finished the collection and I forgot most of them already. xD

Brent So Tales vol 1 is definitely the weakest of the collections. 2 is better and 3 is definitely the best of the short story collections. Demons of Arae is good but the rest of vol 1 is a bit of a mixed bag.

Oh that's good to hear volume 2 and volume 3 is better! Other than Demons of Arae, none of these felt important. 😅

King Crusoe Takes 3 is 100% the best of the collections.

I am sad Parliament didn’t work for you tho, as it’s easily a Top 3 Sun Eater short story for me, and what elevates Tales 1 over Takes 2 for me personally.

Good to know Tales 3 is better! I definitely still plan to read Tales 2 and Tales 3, too. I don't know why but I really couldn't get into Parliament of Owls! 🥲

LambchoP Do you think the novellas and short stories are required reading while binging through the main series? I'm starting Empire of Silence soon as I finish pierce Brown's Lightbringer....

Novellas are certainly great to read. I can't say the same for the collection of short stories yet, though!

I just read the main 5 novels. Didn't feel I missed anything by not having read the short stories.

Crystal I really enjoyed this collection and I usually hate short stories. At this point I'm convinced Ruocchio could write about his bowel movements and I'd still be entertained.
