Howard I like it better than you, Jay, but I admit it does become tedious at times. I was a lot more interested in the hunt for whales and their capture than I was in the processing of the blubber and oil.

Dustincecil It's hard to imagine Ishmael having packed enough ink to blab on and on the way that he did...

Jay Schutt The book could have been much better if Melville just wouldn't go off into oblivion so many, many times with his descriptions. It was a product of the times.

Mikey B. Funny one - Good!!
Although I do love the book - but yet it can get over-wrought, with no flow from one chapter to the next

message 5: by Jay (new)

Jay Schutt It was a product of its time. Melville did a great job of explaining the whaling industry, but it was just too much away from the story at hand that ruined it for me.

Christine Boyer Jay - excellent review - short, sweet, straight to the point. I've actually never read this classic, but the more I hear about it, the less I ever want to pick it up!

Jay Schutt Curiosity got the better of me and I had to read it. Kind of like"The Catcher in the Rye." You either love it or hate it. Nathaniel Philbrick's "In the Heart of the Sea" is a true story that Melville used as a basis for "Moby Dick." Check it out.

Jonathan K (Max Outlier) Great comments all especially Jay's about "Catcher" of which I was part of the 'not like' group. In fact I found it boring when compared to others of its generation. I 'tried' reading Moby, but couldn't get further than the first couple of chapters..Loved the original movie with Gregory Peck though!

Jonathan K (Max Outlier) Speaking of whales, check this out: https://isn.page.link/hSnd

Jay Schutt WOW! That was incredible. I have been on whale watching boats before off Cape Cod and Maine and only saw top fins and tail flukes, but nothing like that.

Jonathan K (Max Outlier) Yep...here in the SF Bay area they're en route to Mexico right now while others are headed to HI!

Just too much information. I was only looking for a whaling story.

Kim Thank you Jay! If you wouldn't have commented on one of my reviews I wouldn't have looked for your Moby Dick review and I wouldn't have found there are people out there who didn't love this book. It's good to know I'm not all alone. :-)

There are always downers of every book no matter how great. Happy reading, Kim.
