Great review! I like your exploration of how Murakami's quest works. I thought it was funny how you named our protagonist's new girlfriend, the ear-girl. That works as well as anything else! I hadn't thought about all the nameless characters in this one and even how the Rat has a name with no definable origin or meaning. Always so much to think about in a Murakami novel!
Thanks! I loved the interweaving of evocative prose with a kind of shimmery sense of reality/unreality. Sadly, most of my book club colleagues felt the book was simply confusing.

I've done lots of book club readings, but never with anything from Murakami. One of the reasons why, I suspect, is that his most iconic works are long and that's always been an issue with the book clubs I've participated in. Too bad your book club didn't enjoy delving into the shimmering sense of unreality in this one.
Yes, our book club also leans towards short books so a lot of more complex and nuanced works are omitted. Really appreciate your comments. Happy reading
