OMG seriously this post was amazing! I never thought of the story this way. Wow, this makes a lot of sense. Thank you so much! And I completely agree with you on Vera and Ms. Bent. I felt that Ms. Bent was very sorry, and every time Vera cursed the child, I felt really disgusted with her.
Great point of view, you are so right! And that's why I didn't really like the alternative ending. Not because I wanted them to die, but because it loses the strength of the plot and takes the build-up to a romantic nowhere.
I thought that order was about how big of a crime they have committed.
