so you'd still recommend I read LotR first? I've only seen the movie years ago, but I haven't read the novels. I do have them on my bookshelf though haha
The great thing about Tolkein, in my opinion is that it doesn't really matter what order you read them in. His works aren't a series in the same since that so many of our genre books are. If however, you are not used to reading epic literature from days of yore, it might be best to read LOTR first since you're familiar with the story already via the movies. That can get you through the drier parts sometimes.
Will, I'd advice you to read LoTR first. After that you can decide the order to follow. The important point, in my opinion is to read LoTR before anything else. That is because I believe Tolkien when he wrote that The Lord of the Rings creates a kind dimensional tunnel towards the past of Middle-Earth. The present is utterly linked to the past, to events that you, as a reader, can "see" from the present, but shrouded in fog: you read names, such as Lúthien, Balrog, Gondolin, Nargothrond and maybe you understand something of them, but you will not know their incredible stories. You find yourself as Sam Gamgee in the Mines of Moria, when Gimli sang the song of the dwarves: you are fashinated, you mind can barely realize the magnificence of the Elder Days. You know that there are story far greater than the one you are reading.
This is magic, in my opinion.
