You can TOTALLY read any of the books. It is just that the characters are awesome and everything goes nicely if you have the stamina to read it in a row.
Yes, each book is rather independent, BUT they play out like a TV series. If you read them out of order, there will be references from the previous book(s) that you will not understand until you've backtracked and read the other(s). IMHO, authors create a series (especially when numbered) to be read in order for maximum benefit to all. The dynamics for each book are all high-impact and dissimilar enough that it should keep you engaged all the way through.
