I think, and this is just simply my opinion not what VR actually might be trying to get across, is that the world of Divergent is a very harsh one. This ridiculous business about GD/GP genes has gotten into everyone's heads and has corrupted the whole system. Therefore, even though there was so much romantic progression between tris and tobias and them helping each other, i think in the end she was going to die. Like i said in my review, the hero hardly gets the good ending and sometimes isn't even recognised for their efforts (just how tobias got angry that tris was dismissed as a rebel). I don't like that she died but i understand why VR done it. Granted, there were many other ways that she could've pulled off an ending to the series but it just wouldn't have been the same. If tris had somehow survived it'd just be 'the hero always lives' type thing going on and i don't think that was the message she was trying to get across. Not making tris go back in the first place would have been good too but that was her home and it was going to be destroyed and finally knowing the truth about the horrors of the world outside, i don't think tris could have beared to watch her city crumble. Plus she's always been a stubborn heroine so i don't think anyone could have stopped her. It's just her characters personality.
