Yeah, Quentin was a little attatched. I think he liked looking for her more than he liked her.(I feel like he might have said that in the book, did he?)Margo was a self-centered bitch and Green's intention was to make us dislike her then he was spot-on.
Not sure if that was in the book, I actually lost interest in Q as a person much sooner than in Margo, and don't remember much of his excuse for looking for her. But I think you're right the essential of the novel is that what Q liked was looking for Margo. The mystery intrigued him more than its solution ever could.
