Monty J Heying Excellent post, Feliks. I agree completely. For a more detailed response check out my review of TSAR.

Ed I believe Hemingway to be the most over-rated author of the 20th century, perhaps longer. I read The Sun Also Rises about a year ago and hated it; I cannot fathom how it can be considered "a great American classic". Were it not for the fact that I love Paris and the first half of the book takes place there, plus the fact that is is relatively short, I NEVER would have finished it. His macho mentality, sexism & antisemitism I found nauseating. So many more better writers before and since to read. Two thumbs down on this creep.

Phil Hamman Perhaps try "A Moveable Feast" which depicts Hemingway's years in 1920's Paris with his wife, Hadley. Hemingway describes his quest to make each sentence he wrote the perfect sentence. This helped me appreciate his writing. He lived in simpler times and wrote with simpler language which has its own beauty. What I like about Hemingway's writing is that he uses this simplicity to create such vivid, interesting scenarios. What I do find puzzling is that while Hemingway is in Paris, he is a poor, struggling writer yet visits cafes daily, travels Europe, and seems to live the life of leisure cavorting with likes of F. Scott Fitzgerald among others!
