I agree he writes his books based on the state he knows and loves. His stories have made me fall in love with North Carolina without ever visiting the state.
I have always loved Carolina, both North and South, although I have never been there. I always loved Carolina right through the Civil War time to the present. So I guess Nicholas Sparks has a special attachment too.
It's also the state that he lives in
