I think you bring up another point here. Readers aren't the ones that do this. It's the high-ranking fans that seem to do this more. An average, casual reader can take a book and read it for what it is. A comparison will be made since we do that with everything to help with context. I believe the issue comes when people try to tear down an author and characters by comparing them to others. It shows an inability by some people to accept a character for what he or she is and struggle to find a previous character that they are 'stolen' from. For example, every female warrior gets the Xena treatment.
