Jon I think everyone should reread the Oberyn vs Gregor fight.
Oberyn was toying with him easily and could've finished him off on several occasions if he wasn't so hell-bent on hearing Gregor's confession.

I think several of the highly skilled fighters could defeat him in a one on one battle; he's just too slow.

BTW, Garlan is a better swordsman than Loras.

Re OP's question, my money is on the Hound. He doesn't get enough respect.

PS I'm assuming he's referring to characters at their peek during ASOIAF, so Dayne is ruled out, as is young Selmy.

Jonnathan Jon tell me just one thing: Oberyn vs The Mountain...Who won the fight in the book?.

Jonnathan Oberyn had the speed and reach advantages because the spear, but swordmens would not had the reach advantage and and most swords are heavier than a spear. Is harder to pin point Clegane in a unprotected spot with a sword and swordsmen are more exposed to Clegane's strikes because they need to get closer to hit him.

BTW Clegane was fast for his size.

Jonnathan And also remember Gregor was able to use a thicker and heavier armor and a greatsword with just one hand and a heavy shield with the other because his strength. Is not an easy task to penetrate that kind of defense and also Gregor has a big advantage in terms of reach as well.

Andytrop79 Even an old selmy is smart though and i wonder if that would help

Mweene I don't agree about the amour. Guys without it can be just as deadly. remember what Bronn did at the Vale. I think Nahaaris, Bronn and Syrio would be in the finals. Only because Barristan is too old and the sword of the morning is dead.
