you HATED a book? wow...
It was an okay read, but looking back on it I wouldn't ever want to read it again. Basically just about a whiney young adult who had everything in life handed to him and he still hated it. I realize he was probably crazy, but still, I just wanted to scream: stfu! Life isn't so bad, especially not for you.
Hated it. Only read it because it was required in high school. It's amazing with all the horrible books that we had to read in school, I still love to read. Couldn't get past the first chapter of Moby Dick, and hated Great Expectations.
I was required to read it in high school, and I couldn't stand it. I should probably re-read it again and see if my reaction has changed now that I've gotten older. At the time I read it, I found Holden to be everything I couldn't stand about other people my age -- whiny, miserable, lacking ambition and refusing to understand his own worth. My least favorite part of the book is when he erases a curse word on a wall somewhere, and he think he's done some great service by making sure that some kid somewhere won't see it -- that summed up, to me, how utterly deluded he was about how he could contribute to society. If he genuinely wanted to become a "catcher in the rye" as his life's work, there were plenty of things he could pursue.
