Andy you HATED a book? wow...

honeybee It was an okay read, but looking back on it I wouldn't ever want to read it again. Basically just about a whiney young adult who had everything in life handed to him and he still hated it. I realize he was probably crazy, but still, I just wanted to scream: stfu! Life isn't so bad, especially not for you.

Bz89 Amen, brother!

Bruce Watson Hated it, maybe. But was it "boring"? Hard to believe.

message 5: by Carole (new)

Carole Hated it. Only read it because it was required in high school. It's amazing with all the horrible books that we had to read in school, I still love to read. Couldn't get past the first chapter of Moby Dick, and hated Great Expectations.

Bill I was required to read it in high school, and I couldn't stand it. I should probably re-read it again and see if my reaction has changed now that I've gotten older. At the time I read it, I found Holden to be everything I couldn't stand about other people my age -- whiny, miserable, lacking ambition and refusing to understand his own worth. My least favorite part of the book is when he erases a curse word on a wall somewhere, and he think he's done some great service by making sure that some kid somewhere won't see it -- that summed up, to me, how utterly deluded he was about how he could contribute to society. If he genuinely wanted to become a "catcher in the rye" as his life's work, there were plenty of things he could pursue.
