True enough they may not exactly be subtle, but even something like Animal Farm has imbedded within it very complex ideas of ideology. Without a firm background in ideology or historical events, what lessons are being learned? It would be interesting to query young students regarding what they felt they learned after reading such a book instead of asking "who did what" questions. Granted, I don't know what a 9th grade level test looks like these days, but it would be interesting to know what a 9th grader thinks about such a work of literature.
