Absolutely agree. In all the previous books, she had to sacrifice something. In the last book, nothing. Total cop-out.
Since the last book was really about Jacob and Renesmee, you had to have her & I'm thrilled that Jacob and Edward are finally friends and they all had a happy life together. We all want a happy life. :)
But the saga was not about Jacob and Renesmee. It was about Bella and Edward. And maybe Jacob, if you're of that team. As such, it did not HAVE to have Renesmee. And after the way SM created her vampires, Renesmee WAS NOT POSSIBLE. We all want a happy life and a happy story, but should it come at the cost of a story that doesn't make sense? I don't think so, and agree with Christina that Renesmee ruined what was a good story up to that point.
Part one is all about Jacob imprinting on Renesemee so the wolves won't destroy the Cullens; Part two is about saving Renesmee from the Volturi who would have destroyed Renesmee if she was found to be an immortal but it would have given the Volturi an opportunity, they thought, to destroy the Cullens finally.
Sorry, I got confused. lol The first part is the pregnancy and the second part is about Jacob imprinting... Didn't get enough sleep last night.
I understand your point that Jacob and Renesmee become more prominent in the last book. What I'm saying is that the majority of the Saga (Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse) was Bella and Edward's story. And because SM wrote vampire-human hybrids out of her universe, it made no sense for Renesmee to even exist, let alone take over the story. SM violated the rules that she created. For the story to continue to make sense, it should have ended as Bella and Edward's story. No RenFailmee.
Some people claim that RenFailmee had to exist to resolve the story. I disagree. RenFailmee was a convenient twist introduced by SM to conclude things in favor of Bella and the Cullens. But without her, it still could have been resolved. What were the conflicts in the story before the pregnancy even began?
1. Unresolved issues between Bella and Jacob.
2. Upcoming treaty violation after Edward changes Bella.
3. Possible visit from the Volturi to check on Bella.
4. Bella's loss of her parents once she's been changed.
These conflicts had been set up through the previous books. None of these issues are insurmountable, and none of them require Renesmee.
1. Bella and Jacob basically need to grow up and move on. That was the whole point of the end of Eclipse, with Bella choosing Edward over Jacob. It might have taken some time, and there could have been more drama along the way, but eventually they would just have to grow up and give it a rest.
2. Not such a big deal, since they were planning on moving away from Forks anyway. Sam was already leaning toward giving them a pass, so it would have been a non-issue.
3. Also not a problem, since Edward had promised to change Bella himself. He just needs to get on with it.
4. This would have hit Bella the hardest, but it was something she had already resolved to do when she chose Edward. And we're told that once Bella makes up her mind, she follows through.
So I don't see any conflict that HAD to have Renesmee. If SM had followed her rules, and continued the story without Renesmee, it could have been resolved just fine. Of course, it would have been a different story, but it would have made more sense, because it would have maintained story logic.
I think it would have been more interesting to see these issues resolved by Bella or the Cullens. It would have involved some growth and some sacrifice, which we saw plenty of in the first three books. But by introducing RenFailmee, SM resolves the issues FOR the main characters. Sure, it's a happy ending, but for me, it's not nearly as satisfying.
I think the point of Renesmee was to show that Bella wasn't actually sacrificing anything. But I thought it was kind of out there because, like you said, the choice was between a mortal life and kids with Jacob and a non-mortal life and no kids with Edward.
Honestly, I could've done without Renesmee. When Bella found out she was pregnant I almost stopped reading right there.
