Hello my fellow LotR lover. And yes i totaly a with you on this!!! :P
It's not all of the younger generation, I loved this book and many of my friends did too :-D So do not fear the legacy of Tolkien lives on!
I really don't like fantasy, and yet still love LOTR and The Hobbit. No, they are not swashbuckling adventures - they are histories of things that never were. This book is probably the reason why I loved books today that employ the "false document" device - like Eaters of the Dead, Pale Fire, House of Leaves, Gulliver's Travels, If On a Winter's Night a Traveller, the work of HP Lovecraft, Dictionary of the Khazars, Magister Ludi (which is a bit dull but still a great book), World War Z and others. Tolkien created all this amazing work to give context to his manufactured language of Elvish. I mean, what an achievement! Dull at times? Sure. Not a roller coaster ride of thrills? No, it isn't. "Horrible"? I hardly think so....
I greatly appreciate this response. Thank you, Jeanie, well said. There is a difference between fact and opinion, and arguing on opposite sides of that is pointless.
Also, I too am of the younger generation, I think Tolkein will always live on. No doubt. :)

"If the title of this thread had been I Hated The Hobbit, there could be no dispute. If you hate it, you hate it. But to say it is "horrible" suggests a critical analysis of its worth, but a simple emotional response to the story doesn't substitute for reasoned judgment."
