Someone agrees with me...

Michael What you have to remember Melissa, is that The Hobbit was originally a children's book. So written for children. As to where LOTR was written for the same readers, only those readers matured with the story.

Dionna Harry Potter was written for children and those books are far more interesting than The Hobbit will ever be, as far as I'm concerned.

Penny But also this is a story of fortitude, friendship and determination to get the job done and make the world a better place for others. To say it was a "stupid adventure for gold" is so
puerile.

glenda LOL, you might want to have a do-over on this one, Melissa. You've somehow managed to miss the point. Gold? Huh.

Mark I have no doubt you love fantasy books, to bad that you fail to recognise that "The Hobbit" is an original attempt on a art form that is now called fantasy but at that time was not.
Fantasy owes so much to the Hobbit and LOTR.

Firstname Lastname "Bawww, I prefer the derivative stories riffing off the original better than the original!" Srsly? Then Hollywood would like your input on Transformers 12, Ocean's 65 (starring Boy Band of the Week), and Iron Man 9: The Geritol Years.

Maggie N First of all Balin kills the dragon and how can you say it is horrible, i know you can have your own opinion but to call something horrible is just sad. No book is absolutely horrible, just bad.

message 9: by Sorrel (new)

Sorrel This is the start of fantasy! The fantasy books you read today in a round about way derived from the hobbit. And it is not just a quest for gold! It is much more than that. It's fine to say you don't like a book but to say the plot was stupid, the ending sucked, the whole book just horrible seems a little judgemental. Someone WROTE this book put time and energy and a little piece of themselves into this work. It was written by an actual human being. his is like being a teacher, reading someone's assignment and writing THIS SUCKED all over it in red pen. It just seems a little mean in my opinion.

message 10: by Samuel (new)

Samuel Perlman This is one of my all-time favorite books. I know this has been said, but it was a history of a nonexistent past, which I love about it. It also has interesting character development and is a great lead-in to the LotR Trilogy. Also, Bard the Bowman of Esgaroth kills the dragon Smaug, not Balin.
Planning on reading the Silmarillion next, good or bad idea (only answer if you've read it.)

Álvaro Carrasquel Kate, Balin doesn´t kill the dragon.
