Calling him useless is probably a bit harsh but I do think he should have had more to do with the "endgame". If he had killed himself at the start of this book so Gaia didn't have his power everyone probably would have been better off (yeah I'm being cynical and harsh again). I was just expecting a bittersweet ending for him, like (Hunger Games spoiler) (view spoiler)[ Katniss had (hide spoiler)]
I agree that my main complaint was Sam not being heroic in the "endgame," and I thought the ending could've been better, but I loved all the character and Edilio and Brianna especially in this book.
