I completely agree with Areeba. Think of all the amazing people that have come from religion. And not just any religion, Christianity. Not that we claim to be angels.

Emily Religion is just like anything else that man has touched- we use it in both good and evil ways. It's no different than science, which has produced amazing technologies, improved our quality of life, cured diseases, and also justified extreme racism (ie: Jim Crow laws in Southern U.S., Nazi Germany, etc. were based on the notion that a particular type of person was biologically superior to another and scientists and scientific evidenced was used to make these arguments seem irrefutable) and created a deadly weapons such as nuclear bombs and other weapons of mass destruction. Religion, likewise, has both produced incredible art and music, laid the foundation for the present-day Western university system, and mobilizes massive volunteer and altruistic efforts, while at the same time, it also inspires people to acts of violence and hatred. Still, I don't agree that religion is any more volatile than any other institution or phenomenon available to us.

Furthermore, there's already been numerous societies that have done away with religion only to be plagued by other evils. Look at the Soviet Union, for instance. The bottom line is that there's never just one problem in society and that without whatever that element is we would live in a perfect world. It's impossible to strive towards a perfect world, because the world and human nature is fundamentally flawed and imperfect- that's not to say that we're all evil and horrible, but we all have a potential for evil, and in any type of society there will be those who find away to bring evil into it. There are limitless things that men can corrupt and use to harm others. It's the same with love in Delirium. While it can be misused and have negative effects, it can also be used beautifully and have great effects. People, however, should be free to use it in the proper way, but that necessitates that some people can use it improperly. It's the same with religion, government, science, etc. In order to be free, you have to accept that people will abuse these things and hurt others with them, but in the end, it's always worth it to be free rather than to be denied something for "your own good.
