It's definitely not himself from the future or Sam. It is however someone who is either a senior at his school or someone who has already graduated because he asks if they pulled a senior prank since the person is older than him
unless he is sending them to himself, but externalizing and detaching it from himself. A therapist could have told him to write letters to someone made up. its a common tool in CBT
