Ah, Midwestocean, now we're getting somewhere!
I had a friend whose husband left her with three children under five years of age and ran off with his work colleague. She married again, a kind and gentle man, but after he died, it was the first horrid husband her mind rested on. I suppose in Margaret Mitchell's case it wasn't quite the same because she did the 'leaving', but I do believe that she would have remembered the good parts and forgotten the bad.
