Yes, "Hands" is a perfect analogy depicting the extremes to which a society is apt to go when fear overcomes rational judgement. Considering the controversy over gay marriage and abortion, we've come only a little way since Anderson's time. But, let's celebrate progress.
Mr. Antollini's drinking, offering cigarettesto Holden touching while he was asleep, calling him handsome, his "admiring" are highly suspect. Salinger almost goes all the way in describing Holden's perception and relationship with Mr. Antollini's and then just cheats his audience out of answer.
