Lucifer is the ultimate bad boy. Milton gave him some good qualities. The poet Shelley didn't like that.
A lot of young readers aren't able to digest Milton yet. Some of them will never really get there. But with literacy among young adults taking an alarming swan-dive, I am glad they (and others) can find something they want to read, even when it is not required for a class. And I do think Lori is right about the shock value. I'd much rather my child shock me with vampire books than with, say, a visit from the cops!
Stephen King said on TCM that when people root for the monsters, something is wrong. He might have a point.
