I agree with this. It was that tone that caught my attention, right from the first line: "The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed." I don't normally remember quotes all that well, but that one has stuck with me going on ten years now. I really liked the feel in the first book because it was so different from all of King's other work that I'd read. That said, Wizard and Glass remains my favorite of the bunch, but it's closely followed by The Gunslinger.
