I think the mockingjay - in its own way - is a symbol of innocence. It showed one district's quiet defiance of the Capitol much like the mockingbird symbolized Tom Robinson's quiet defiance when he refused to "admit" to the rape of a white woman - a crime of which he was completely innocent.
whoa. I hadn't thought of that. a nod to Harper Lee...interesting. We'd have to ask her.
