You don't think she was empowered? She managed to survive for all those years, protect her son from even seeing the monster who held them captive and then found a way to actually set them free. If that's not empowered, I don't know what is.
I totally agree. I finished the book but had to force myself. The childish speech patterns given to the boy drove me crazy. Still don't get why this book was so popular.
I don't see that there would have been much of a story had she escaped earlier. Also, it was based (very loosely) off of a real case where a woman was kept in much the same condition with multiple children: the youngest child had never left the Room.
