i think it is realistic because it showed how they hadto struggle to survive, not everything was setup for them to survive unrealistically. They drank from the old jar which couldve been dangerous but they did it to survive.
In my opinion, I thought that the survival of Stanley and Zero would be possible even in the real world because the dessert at Camp green lake had supposedly drought for decades which would not allow any wind to move sand along into the lake. I do agree with the weird coincidences happening regularly that helped them survive, almost making the story cliche where none of the two best friends dies. An example of a lucky coincidence would be how Stanley had found Zero under Sam's boat. Another 'lucky' coincidence was finding food in the boat, it seems really cynical how food can last almost a century and not rot. Anyway, I think the author is trying to give us readers a message by saying how we need to make our own luck when we face something challenging. Risks need to be taken and what we do may not go according to plan but might work differently. Having a clear path is what set Stanley and Zero golden for survival.
