If you are nitpicking, then I feel you should know that LoTR is a single NOVEL, broken up into 3 volumes and 6 books.
Its not a trilogy true, but to be accurate its not one book either. Although you can get all 6 books/3 volumes together in one big book these days...
It's one book in the normal sense of the word 'book'. The fact that its 6 parts are called 'books' doesn't change that. No one is going to read, say 'Book 1' and 'Book 4' only, unlike in case of a series of 6 separate books.
I agree with everything Mitali says, but still recommend reading The Hobbit first.
