Agreed, A Fine Balance was one of the most depressing books I ever read! It still makes me sad to this day 5 years later. Water for Elephants is joyful compared to that!
I really did love A Fine Balance, even though it was devastating. Water For Elephants didn't leave me feeling badly at all.
What about the slew of WW2 books out there?
