OK, I loved this book and had convinced myself that people who don't like it just have unsophisticated taste in reading; but your comment cracked me up. Point well taken. I still loved it, but I was willing to refer back to the "Cast of Characters" practically every page to remind myself *which* Mary or *which* Thomas or *which* Jane was being referred to. I don't agree at all that it was dull, meandering, or bloated. But a little confusing, yes. That's not the author's fault, however; unless she was willing to change names willy-nilly, the historical nature of this book required use of the actual names of characters.

It's funny, I liked the side characters better than the main ones - I LOVE Raft and the boys. Also wasn't sure how much was grounded in fact and can't seem to fine out anywhere.
