Good insight, Nik, but I also believe, or want to believe, that a good teacher can grease the wheels of literary acumen by providing a few prompts before an assignment, along with discussion after the reading. Nothing dogmatic, but some guidance at least. If a student is given clues on what to look for, there's a fair chance they might actually find it.
