Don't forget that Zusak's own parents emigrated from Germany after the war - it's perfectly reasonable for him to have had her do the same and leave the country with so many bad memories and made a new start.
Thanks for those comments, it make more sense like this. My family stayed in Europe but we were on the winning side which might have made a huge difference for the survivors.
