but you wanted a happy ending, that's the point. The humanity of people(Papa, Mama, and Rudy) trying to get back to something normal. Or fighting to get a small shred of dignity left in Germany at that point.
I think giving it a happy ending (in the letting everyone live way) would almost be distasteful. This is a book about a terrible time in German history. It would not be fair to anyone to inaccurately portray such a time. Sure, maybe Rudy could have lived, and that would be fine, but I feel like a happy ending would distract from many of the historical issues dealt with in the book.
I'm a sucker for sad endings anyway but "The Book Thief" end was totally appropriate for Holocaust & wartime. What do you expect, right, because it certainly wasn't "let's all drink & be merry" time for the victims or survivors. Although, I think there is some hope at the end because if even Death can be "haunted by humans", then maybe we ourselves as humans will be haunted by history & our horrible extremes & hopefully learn from & not repeat our tragic mistakes.
