Thank you for the nice words, booksandbeaches. After I read the trilogy for the first time, I had questions about Peeta's stability and whether he and Katniss really had healed and connected. I went through the books searching for textual clues, ended up reading the trilogy four times, and taking 30 pages of notes. This is one of my favorite subjects to discuss! lol And I have so much more to say...I tried to keep it short above. :)
I agree. The books are pretty good little self-contained mysteries. I tend to obsess about my books, though - I just blogged about it here http://pineappletales.com/2013/04/04/... Check it out if you want. :)
I feel a little strange commenting on this more than a year after it was posted, but I just finished the books and was kind of looking for similar answers. Bravo Courtney- you nailed it.... least that's what I'll choose to believe cause I was having a hard time reconciling with the end too.
I felt it appropriate- I mean it was a horrible war/overall experience so it couldn't really end with rainbows and flowers. Although I definitely didn't feel she picked Peeta only because Gale was no longer around (that part was clear- that she realized she would have always ended up with Peeta cause she needed his bright light, as opposed to the darkness Gale had, that was the same as hers), I still felt like something was missing- like Peeta didn't really "get the girl" like he should have cause of the hijacking. But Courtney, you put this into a good perspective. Thank You.
And as far as Gale goes- wikipedia states that "Katniss does not truly return Peeta's affections; she initially believes he is simply trying to curry favor with the public and with the sponsors, and she still has very strong feelings for Gale." I don't believe this in the context it is implied. Right off in the books, she says how there's nothing romantic between her and Gale- they just happen to be best friends. She wonders what Gale is thinking about all the kissing, but it's not really til the second, even the third book that she is more careful with her feelings about Peeta in front of Gale- not because she necessarily has feelings for Gale, but now she knows he has them for her and she doesn't want to hurt him. Which is probably why it takes her so long to admit her feelings for Peeta, because she doesn‘t want to hurt Gale, cause they are close friends. So maybe with Gale finally gone, she can admit to herself she loves Peeta, and needs him. But she doesn’t love Peeta cause Gale is gone, she just finally admits it cause he’s gone.
Somewhere else I read that Katniss consistently pulls away from Gale and goes back to Peeta and I think that knowledge really makes the whole story better. She only kisses Gale when he’s hurt, and she is constantly thinking of Peeta. It was never going to be Gale. It was always Peeta- and she did mourn him after the hijacking- she felt the Peeta she loved was dead, but as you said Courtney, Peeta was fighting it. They do save each other, not only physically, throughout the stories, but in the end- which is the only way they can move on from the horrors they’ve seen- together, in love, comforting each other, in each others arms. Not just because they were near in proximity - it ended up being that way because that’s what they both needed/wanted.
