Andrew Smith I always wonder if the writer has any input in the actors because they always seem to be so off.

Jennifer I feel like they should at least have a say in the actors since the writing gets torn up to make it "sellable" as a tv show

Andrew Smith I dont disagree, but how many times have we seen the opposite? All too often a slick director decides his vision, and ends up with a nightmare for readers.

Jennifer True True..its a shame there is no "happy medium" in the translation from books to tv. Its just too many imaginations to appease, which is the wonder of books..the imagination we use to create the world and characters in our heads. The better the writer the clearer a picture we can get. I think Jim Butcher did a great job giving us something to hold onto with Harry and his world :)

Andrew Smith I agree, but sometimes I am not sure I want to hold on to it. (Might be a bit full of slime or wanting to eat us all)

J.R. Broadwater Meh, the actors they chose didn't bother me. I'm not as interested in "looks" in an adaptation unless their appearance plays a major part of who the character is. They picked a guy with a decent build and height for Dresden. I really liked who they chose for Murphy as her attitude and build was about right (even if she wasn't blonde, and it'd be hard to find someone that short). The major problem is, as has been pointed out, the characters weren't allowed to act like themselves. Dresden wasn't as sarcastic and witty as he should have been (though the actor they chose could have pulled that off easily.) Harry hardly ever actually used magic, which is a problem for a show about a wizard. In the show he was just another P.I. with some parlor tricks. We never got to see him really lash out much. All he did was wave a drumstick around and open a door or two, or use his shield bracelet 9which was the one thing they did okay).

Bob's personality was WAY off even though, again, the actor they chose was good for the role.

As for the stories, it got better as they went but some of the things they changed there just wasn't any reason for. Adapting to make it fit for TV or a movie is fine and often necessary. Like Harry's dad and Justin's relationship in the series. I think that was a decent change that worked in the context of the story they were telling for the series. however, changing stuff just to change it does a disservice to the original, it's creator, and the fans. I think Producers are finally starting to catch on that the closer to the source you stick the better you do overall, with the success of recent comic book movies and series like Game of Thrones.
