Debbie Thanks Donna! I haven't used this forum before so I am pleased that it was a valid criticism. I have read the other comments and mostly agreed with them. Ultimately, I AM enjoying the book, particularly the way the author humanises these rather enigmatic characters!

DeeDee You are very welcome. Glad you are enjoying it still, I so wanted to enjoy it, it is usually just exactly the type of historical novel I love, but alas, it's not to be! :)

Kathleen Brannon I found it difficult to "break the code" in reading this book at first, but had a breakthrough early on (much like my experience reading Faulkner for the first time)and "got it." It's become one of my favorite books (and I think it is superior to the 2nd book, but the 2nd is still a great read).
