Thanks for the encouragement, Melanie! I think you're right. I will - Harlen Coben is just that good--well worth taking a chance on!
Another good optio is Sue Grafton's Alphabet Books with her female private detective Kinsey Milhone.Kinsey is as faulty as the rest of us, not cocky but clever. Believable characters.

I've read a couple of these and Kinsey is a bit too disturbed and depressing for me--she lacks the humor and charm of the perhaps equally disturbed, yet far more entertaining and palatable, Myren Bolitar. Myren balances out the cynicism and darkness of Winn other characters well.
The first say 6 Sue Grafton books were less than stellar but Sue Grafton's writing because incredible as the series went on. As the books got thicker, so did the plots. Kinsey doesn't have much of a sense of humour but there is a lot of character development as the books continue.

I found Kinsey to be depressed but fighting it. She at least appeared a real person and not some unbelievable super sleuth.Myron's cynicism is funny and the characters ( the Ache brothers) are humerous too. Winn's cynicism is much darker and Myron counteracts it nicely. I suppose it wouldn't do for us all to like the same though but I'm sure you have other favourites too.

I agree that the books were a little bleaker when they started but she soon developed Kinsey's full character and rounded her out. As per my previous response, I liked Kinsey because she's so believable and not 'Over the top' smart.
