Wow, somebody else who's read Dragon's Egg! Great stuff!

I notice that I listed only books written by guys. That won't do. So...
- Dream Dancer (and the entire Kerrion Empire trilogy) by Janet Morris
- The First Man in Rome by Colleen McCullough
- Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery
- The Pride of Chanur (and the entire Compact Space series) by C.J. Cherryh
- West With the Night by Beryl Markham
- Doomsday Book by Connie Willis
There -- now I feel much better (and oh so politically correct).
Cool...Eco and Uris! QB VII and Focault's Pendelum...great books!
The Name of the Rose and Cold Mountain are great choices.
Niven and Pournelle's Moties are cool if somewhat dated. Have to re-read Lord of Light and Dragon's egg to remember what they were about. Nice list.
