What was the question again?
J.A, one of the coolest replies I've ever read.
David, the book says that 42 is the answer to all Universe and Life. You see, J.A is implying, this is book is as significant as the Life, Universe and Everything. :)
It's interesting that many of the bizarre things that Adams thought up are now central themes in serious sci-fi novels. Take for instance the infinite probability drive. I have read about probability based hyper drives in several stories lately. "deep thought", the idea of designing a computer to calculate the meaning of life is perhaps the central theme of most modern sci fi- Read "existence" the new novel from David Brin. Adams managed to satire things that hadn't been written yet, I consider that significant.
Loved J.A.'s answer! For me, I think the Hitchhiker's Guide is significant because it was one of the first sci fi books that mainstreamed the genre - it was popular with people who didn't normally read sci fi. It also is my favorite kind of book, as in it is silly at times, very funny and highly entertaining. I'd say it was one of many influences on my own writing, and readers of my humorous fantasy, The Door in the Sky, can probably see a slight similarity in the style of writing. I loved this book, in fact, I loved the whole series! And please don't forget when you read these books to bring a towel :>)
