This is actually how I read the series, too, and I really liked approaching it this way. I think one of the reasons that Magician's Nephew comes to play so late in the game in publishing order is due to the fact that there doesn't seem to have been an intention on Lewis's part to write this "prequel" to LW&tW. I have a feeling it was a relatively external demand. I haven't done my own homework on that quite yet, though, so I would love to be corrected if someone knows otherwise.
I don’t know the why so can't help you there but I am glad the prequel was written. Its a bigger world of a story itself and is one of my favourites. If I could pick an adventure to have it would be this one.
