Uhm, well, what kind of story would we end up with then? :s Because all the books are based upon the Horcruxes?
pardon me? Five and a half book don't even need to mention them and the hunting down of these little deus exes was an unneccessary plot device.
I don't even think that JKR herself had the concept ready made before starting on book 6 and then retrofitted it into the already written stories.
Just hinge it on the scar from the beginning and even the prophecy would still be valid without six useless additional artifacts. when the Horcruxes turned up the brilliant books were gone and it turned messy and a lot less phantastic than it had been. so yes drop them and write something more like the first five books and it would just be perfectly fine with me (and i guess a lot of people hating THP and TDH)
It would mean that Harry could kill Voldemort just without any problems, because Voldemort would be a mortal person in the first place.. And he became such a snake-like person, because he splitted his soul in those pieces. I don't think she just came up with in when she woke up one day. "Heyyyy, let's make Voldemort split his soul!" :p
I agree with Mel, there wouldn't be a story without the horcruxes!
